"Move everything to the cloud" was the default advice for years. Today, many organisations are taking a more nuanced view: some workloads thrive in the public cloud, others are cheaper and simpler in colocation or on-premises, and some belong right at the edge. The right answer is usually a deliberate mix.

Start with the workload, not the platform

For each important application, write down five things: how predictable its usage is, how sensitive its data is, how much latency matters, how much data it moves, and how critical it is to the business. These answers do most of the deciding for you.

OptionOften a good fit forWatch out for
Public cloudVariable or fast-growing workloads, new applications, managed services, global reachEgress and storage costs at scale, cost governance, skills
ColocationSteady, predictable workloads; owned hardware; strong connectivity to carriers and cloudsUpfront hardware investment, contract terms, remote-hands costs
On-premisesWorkloads tied to a site, legacy systems, strict physical controlPower, cooling and resilience of the building; staffing
EdgeLow-latency processing near devices, sites with unreliable WAN, local data rulesPhysical security and remote management of many small sites

Don't forget data residency

Where your data is stored and processed can be as important as cost. Sector regulators, privacy laws and customer contracts in India, the EU, the GCC and elsewhere may require specific locations or safeguards. Map these requirements before choosing platforms.

Model cost over three to five years

Compare total cost of ownership, not monthly list prices: hardware refresh, licences, power, connectivity, support, staff time and exit costs. Steady workloads often look different over five years than over five months.

Plan for hybrid from the start

Most organisations end up hybrid. Design identity, networking, monitoring, security and backup to work consistently across environments, so moving a workload later is a project — not a crisis.
